What's Your Favorite Daytrip Destination?
Today's post is on packing for a daytrip with kids. Where do you daytrip?
Have you had to give up any daytrip plans because of the crazy-high gas prices? I'm wondering if it makes more sense right now to take longer vacations instead of several short trips.
We live in central CA, so Daytrips R Us--we're just a few hours away from so many great cities and attractions! I grew up in southern CA, so the beach is my favorite daytrip ever. Here they call it the "coast" and after a trip to Pismo last year I "get" the distinction: not hot enough to swim, and rocky, not silky, sand. I think we'll drive South instead for any beach trips we take this summer.
We live about 1 hour from Sequoia National Forest. Going up the mountain is a great way to beat the heat when it hits over 100 here. And the giant redwoods are awesome.
My4 yr old son specifically requests to go shopping in Fresno (nearest "big city," 45 min. away). A boy after my own heart! He likes the mall/shopping center playgrounds, fountains, sprinkler pads, and the calamari at Cheesecake Factory. We used to live there, so we have lots of friends and family to visit with (or beg for free babysitting so my husband and I can see a movie).
Disneyland! Our town just makes the cut to qualify for the Southern California annual pass, so 2008 is our family's own "Year of a Million Dreams." We've already been 3 times since Christmas, and have 3 more trips scheduled. The passes paid for themselves the 2nd trip, and we use the Chase Disney Visa to rack up Disney Dollars, so most of our food/souvenirs are "free."

Wow, those are some wonderful day trips, in CA. I live about 2 hours from Dallas/FortWorth. So, that would be a big day trip for us. Also, there is a place called Canton, TX nearby. It has the largest flea market/ arts and craft market in Texas and beyond. It is opened on the first weekend of the month. You can find ANYTHING there and it is fun. That is a great day trip. Grace loves to watch the people while she sits in her stroller and I love to look at all the goodies and try not to spend too much money.

I am a So Cal girl so you may recognize these destinations, I love taking day trips with the kids and being in San Diego we are so lucky to have so many places to go.
My favorite spots to go are:
The San Diego Zoo-how can you beat this zoo? It is so beautiful and lush and there are so many great exhibits. We are about a half hour away and the annual passes are very inexpensive plus parking is free!
Julian-This is a small historical gold rush town. Great antique shops, the best apple pie around and it is very slow paced and kid friendly. Since it is in the mountains you can actually see snow here in the winter (hard to find in Southern California)
Sea World-you can feed dolphins, pet sting rays, play in the water splash area and see shamu-What more can I say?
La Jolla Shores-beautiful ocean shore with cliffs, grassy areas, caves to explore, tidepolls and a seal "safe zone". It is a gorgeous place to walk around and play
SAHMmy My parents live in Gilroy which is probably pretty close to you, I love going to the Sequoia National Forest when we visit

Mmm Gilroy...fried artichoke hearts at the roadside stand and the smell of garlic hits you 10 miles before you hit town. It's about 2 hours away--my aunt lived there forever before she moved to Carmel, so I've been many times.

You all are taking me back! I grew up in Central, CA, and that's a great place to live for daytrips! You can go anywhere in a day! Beach, mountains...you name it!
I went to college at UCSD and practically lived at LaJolla shores!
Now I'm in Southern Oregon, and it takes a while to go anywhere. We like to go up to Roseburg to visit old friends. We used to live there. Heading up to Mt. Ashland is always fun, too. Or sometimes we drive up to get ice cream at Rice Hill. They have the BEST ice cream!
Now that my kids are 5 and 10, we don't really pack much at all, other than a picnic lunch and balls and frisbees.
