Blissfully Domestic Living

The Magazine & Community all for you!

I posted this in response to a different discussion about countertops but would really be interested in everyone's opinion and didn't want it lost in the other thread.

Do you allow your children (I'm thinking pre-teens and older) to actually SIT on the countertops?

I felt like such an "old lady" at work recently when I actually had to tell a 20-something co-worker not to sit on the kitchen countertops. When she actually got back up there after I jokingly made a comment about moving her butt, I then said something to the effect that it "really bothers me to have your bottom where I'm going to be preparing food." She did get down and acted offended. However, when I mentioned the situation privately to someone else, they weren't as shocked as I was.

What do you think?

Were there no chairs available? Some people! No, my kids (or their friends) will never be allowed to sit on the counters. Spinoff--I don't even put my purse in the baby seat area in a shopping cart with the seat flipped down because I know my own kids have pooped in a cart many times and I figure they're not the only ones. Ew.

I will admit to sitting on the counter when I was in college. Not now, though, and my kids won't be doing it either.

And I'm gagging at the thought of shopping carts. This wasn't the post to read right before dinner. LOL

I did it when I was younger, but I sat on the edge of the sink, so it wasnt as gross since we constantly cleaned and wiped that edge. My kids can't for now

Nope...she should know better! I mean if she wants to do that at home, that's one thing, but not at work. I agree.

I work with a ton of younger women (I'm 38) who are definitely in another zone than me! ;)

I surprised a babysitter one time when I told her that she could not put the baby on the counter. How many times had she propped the baby there to wash their face and hands? Ewwww! Especially with a little diaper-butt. e-coli anybody?

That 20 something needed to be told. I would have spoken up if I were there.

This "child" should have know better, honestly how old was this girl? I can understand a very small child (ages 2 to 3) esp. when you are giving them medication but other than that it is nasty! Your bottom is not the cleanest part of your body!

Thank you, ladies. I feel a little less "old lady" crabby. Sadly, even though that incident was quite a while ago, the gal in question still avoids me in the hallways.

Although, to add more proof, this same gal and her friend were laying on the company picnic tables, sunning themselves, not too long ago. PEOPLE, please!! Good thing I didn't see that or who knows WHAT would have popped out of my mouth! LOL!!
