The Magazine & Community all for you!

My last article at BD is about Bisphenol A (BPA) which is found in many of the plastics we use everyday, and may be a health threat as it leaches into our foods.

I haven't microwaved in plastic in years (except for the occasional Lean Cuisine or the like) and try to store things in glass in the fridge.

What do you use? Right now I use regular bowls with plastic wrap, unless the food is hot in which case I usually place a plate on the top.

I'd like to find a nice stackable set of glass storage bowls with glass lids. Any suggestions?

When we moved here almost 2 yrs ago the shelf was too small for our microwave, it's fairly new so we weren't about to purchase another. The kitchen is tiny and I wasn't prepared to give up any of the valuable countertop real estate so we put it in the basement on top of our extra fridge. We barely ever use it anymore and that is a good thing. I can steam frozen veggies as quickly as it takes me to run downstairs several times to cook them in the nuker.

I need to raid the antique shops for some vintage storage solutions but I use plastics/gladware to freeze foods... anyone have a solution for that?

I love how much cleaner my kitchen looks just by getting rid of that microwave! I've just about convinced my husband that it would be more worthwhile to just save our money and buy and double microwave oven/traditional oven wall unit since our oven is on its last legs...even without a new oven, I'm not buying a new microwave and it matters more to me!

I have been thinking about this for a few weeks--my sister bought some vintage (and very cute!) glass bowls with lids at an antique store a few weeks ago. I had already decided to start storing soups in Mason jars, but I might also hunt around for some vintage glass bowls and lids!

Thinking about the vintage glass--I use an old (at least 30 years) Pyrex bowl with glass lid--the bowl looks like Corel, not clear. Does anyone know if there's any chance of this being leaded glass? I think I'm actually more worried about lead than the plastic chemicals.

You raise a good question--I tried to find an answer on-line and everything I found stated that Pyrex is lead-free. I also found that Corelle and Pyrex are owned by the same company (World Kitchen).

I have been concerned about this for a while too. I haven't made the switch yet, but have been looking at different options. I have found a few routes that I may go.

Martha Stewart has a line of all glass storage containers that you can find at K-Mart. These were sold individually I believe but have the ability to be stacked. I also found some just yesterday at Wal-Mart that are all glass. I don't remember if they would stack or not. I am sure they would but I didn't pay attention. The other option that I have considered would be to go with original vintage glass containers.

Hope this helps.

Are vintage ones even microwavable?

*whispers* cause Rubbermaid is in my backyard....they are building a hugh-mong-us storage building....bet it is a quarter section long...the po po new Scwan building has had to put up with their equipment & mud for months now...

Use glass. Have one glass lid left to a 3 piece glass wedding set.

Use mason jars to heat water to make sweat & plain tea.

Is Tupperware toxic also ?

What about milk we purchase in plastic. Braums advertises there's is free from something, but it still comes in plastic.

What about the plastic thingy from pampered chef that you steam veggies in...is that safe?

I hit thrift and antique stores and flea markets for vintage (and maybe not so vintage) pyrex refrigerator dishes and lidded casseroles. Indulges my obsession with vintage pyrex, and is healthier for us...I guess! Other than that, I use Rubbermaid 's Premier line. I use them mainly for storage, but sometimes stuff does get microwaved in them, too.

Check this out! I'm not a Walmart shopper, but it's still cool...Walmart is removing from it's Canadian stores baby bottles, sippy cups, food containers, water bottles and pacifiers that contain BPA .

Hopefully the US will follow suit.

Sounds like they are being proactive. Our gov't intends to ban all baby bottles that contain BPA. It's a start at least. You can read about it here: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/04/18/bisphenol-a.html?ref=rss
