Blissfully Domestic Living

The Magazine & Community all for you!

My son, age 15, wants to start babysitting to earn extra money. I teach at a middle/high school, and several of the teachers have young children, so I think he'll be able to find at least a couple of clients. I really think he'll be good at it: he's responsible, loves kids, and has a younger brother he's been practicing on! He wants me to help him make a flyer, but I have no idea what the average going rate is for teen babysitters. Any suggestions?

I have no idea the going rate for babysitters, but I wanted to warn you so you can handle it just-in-case: I know a lot of mothers who will not leave their children with male babysitters. Hopefully, because the other staff knows you, he'll get referrals that way and it won't be a problem. Just thought I'd prepare you, though, because I'm not sure people will tell you the real reason if they don't call your son. ( I don't have that bias, but that is also because my oldest is a 17-year old boy. )

He has an advantage besides me working there. The teachers have all known him since he was in 6th grade. I thought about that too, when he first came up with the idea, but his personality makes it a great choice for him. I do appreciate the heads up though!

I'm in Southern California and pay $3 per child per hour. Since I have 4 children (and one due in 6 weeks), my babysitter is making more than the current minimum wage! :)

When I just had one child (MANY years ago!), I paid $5 per hour.

Hope this helps!

I know a lovely young lady who charges $5/hr for the 1st child, + $1/hr for each additional child, with a minimum of $20. (But I think she can be flexible on that.) Her parents drive her one way (that will change this summer when she gets a license) and the parents of the sittees take her home. I think once she is driving herself, her prices may increase slightly.

I have some friends who babysit and charge $10 an hour plus $5 more for each additional child.

Hey, Stephanie, How did it all turn out for your son?

He made a flyer to put up in the teacher's lounge. A couple of teachers said they were going to book him soon!
